Conley Thompson was last seen at Locke Park in Barnsley where he had gone to play with his friends at around 6pm.
More than 50 officers from South Yorkshire Police were searching for the seven-year-old boy last night.
A body has been found at a building site close to his home. Formal identification has not taken place but police say they believe it is the schoolboy.

"Children often play at site"
Twitter user Brett, who used to live on the estate where the body was found, said children often play at the site despite the risk.
He wrote: "I will say this about the spot where Conley Thompson was found, it is a dangerous place to play but kids do. I was knocked unconscious there."
Conley had reportedly played there in the past, despite being warned not to.
"News made my blood run cold"
Another neighbour of Conley's family said the news had made his blood "run cold".
John Wright, a family friend who said Conley played with his children, said: "Police came round last night asking and my kids told them he might be playing at the construction site.
"They said they'd looked but not found him. I'm telling you they should have found that bairn last night.
"How can someone not be there then suddenly be there. It's a disgrace."
Mr Wright said Conley sometimes used to play on the construction site and had been warned off in the past.
South Yorkshire Police has been contacted for comment on the allegations.
He added: "He used to come and play round my house with my kids. He were [sic] a lovely lad just like any other his age.
"He played with all the kids in the area. They had little scraps and fights and things just like kids do.
"I know his mother and she must be devastated."
Community's grief over "sweet kid'
A friend of Conley's mother, Paula Thompson, who is a stay-at-home mum, said: "I'm devastated.
"I heard the news this morning. I just feel for Paula. She must be beside herself.
"He was a little angel, bless him. He loved playing outdoors.
"He was just like any other boy his age, doing alright at school.
"He was really popular and had lots of friends of all ages. I have four kids and he used to play with them.
"He was such a sweet kid."
"A jolly little lad"
A neighbour has described Conley Thompson as a "jolly little lad", adding "it's a real tragedy".
The resident's comments were reported by Channel 5's Peter Lane.
He also tweeted: "Former babysitter of Conley Thompson tells@5_News she saw him playing yesterday. "He was mint...confident...loved football".

Conley Thompson, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, had gone to play with his friends at Locke Park at around 6pm.
He is believed to have left around two hours later and was due to return home to Underwood Avenue in Worsbrough, but never turned up.
The youngster was reported missing a short time later, and police grew increasingly concerned about his whereabouts.
Around 50 officers searched for the boy overnight, and a social media campaign to raise awareness was launched this morning.
Sadly, at 8.30am a body was found and police believe it is Conley. The investigation is ongoing.

Pictures of forensic officers at the scene where it is believed Seven-year-old Conley's body was found.
At least six white-suited staff were seen at the building site, close to the youngster's home and the park where he played with friends last night.
So far the death is being treated as "unexplained".
"I heard screams and cries coming from the house"
Residents in the area have expressed their shock and grief at the news.
One lady, who did not want to give a name, said: "I don't know the family but this is a close-knit area and word spreads like wildfire.
"I just can't believe it, it's so sad. I feel terrible for them. I heard screams and cries coming from the house which must be when they were told.
"People have been writing things on Facebook like 'Rest In Peace'.
"Apparently he had been seen climbing around in the area near the church yard.
"I often see him playing about on the street."
Another lady in the area said: "I can't imagine what the family must be going through. It's just unbelievable.
"He was just a kid who liked playing out in the street."
One man, who also did not want to give a name, said: "It's so sad. The whole community is in shock."
Family too devastated to speak
Conley's family were too devastated to speak this morning - while a woman, believed to be his mother, left the street in a car.
A strong police presence remained on the street where the seven-year-old lives, with two officers flanking the door of the semi-detached house where he is believed to have lived with his mother.
The death has stunned the community.

Twitter and Facebook have been flooded with messages of support to the family of Conley Thompson in the wake of a body being found.

Full police statement on body
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Officers searching for missing 7-year-old Conley Thompson have this morning (Monday, 27 July) found the body of a child on a construction site on Bank End Road in the Worsbrough area of Barnsley.
"The body was found at approximately 8.30am. Formal identification of the body is yet to take place, however it is believed to be that of Conley.
"His family have been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers."
Detective Inspector Victoria Short leading the investigation said: “We deployed our full resources with officers searching throughout the night to find Conley and we are deeply saddened by this tragic development.
“While it is early in the investigation, the death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem will take place in due course.
“Our thoughts remain with Conley’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Police presence at building site
Heavy police activity has been reported around a building site a mile from where Conley went missing.
A number of officers are reportedly at a construction site in Bank End Road, Barnsley.
It is a short distance from the boy's home and is located between his house and the park where he played with friends.
School headteacher: "We're praying he's OK"
The headteacher of a primary school close to Conley's home has appealed for information about the missing boy.
Nichola Thorpe, the head of Worsbrough Bank End Primary School, wrote: "Dear families, can you help? Conley is missing since last night (Sunday) and the police are looking for him.
"We pray that he is safe and has stayed with friends. Please share and spread the word to get him home safe and well."

50 officers involved in search
BBC Look North has reported that 50 officers have been looking for missing Conley overnight.
The alarm was raised last night after the schoolboy didn't return home from the park, where he had been playing with friends.
It rained heavily in Barnsley last night from 8pm onwards.

Police search for seven-year-old boy
Fears are growing over the safety of a 7-year-old boy who went missing after going to park to play with friends.
Conley Thompson was last seen at Locke park in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, where he had gone to play with his friends at around 6pm. He has been missing since 8pm last night.
He is believed to have left the park at around 8pm and was due to return home to a street two miles away in Worsbrough, however he never turned up and was reported missing shortly after.
Conley is white and has very short mousey brown coloured hair and blue eyes.
He was last seen wearing a blue checked shirt, red shoes, a black coat and brown trousers.
