Katy Perry appears to have accused Taylor
Swift of "capitalizing on the take down of a woman" after the singer got
into a spat with Nicki Minaj.
Earlier this week Minaj complained about her single Anaconda
being snubbed in the video of the year category at this year's MTV
Video Music Awards. In a series of tweets she suggested that the music industry was biased against African-American women and preferred female singers with "very slim bodies".
"If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year," she wrote.
"I've done nothing but love and support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot," tweeted Swift, who has cast herself as a feminist.
Swift apologised on Thursday, tweeting: "I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki."
Minaj tweeted back: "That means so much Taylor, thank you."
She added: "I've always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let's move on."
Perry entered the debate on Wednesday making pointed criticism of Swift, without using her name.
"Finding it ironic to parade the 'pit women against other women' argument about as one unmeasurably [sic] capitalizes on the takedown of a woman," she wrote to her nearly 73 million Twitter followers.
Perry and Swift are two of the biggest pop stars in the world but are rumoured to have had a rocky relationship.
Swift's Bad Blood contains the lyrics: "Now we got problems / And I don't think we can solve them" which is thought to be about another singer she accused of stabbing her in the back by hiring the same people who had been working for her.
It is widely believed the lines are about Perry.
Perry also said it was a "travesty" that Rihanna's singer B**** Better Have My Money had not been nominated, despite being released during the eligibility period.
Miley Cyrus will host the ceremony, which takes place in Los Angeles on 30 August.
